History

The School of Accounting and Finance (formerly Department of Accountancy until 31 August 2003) is the longest established accountancy school in Hong Kong. With a history dating back to 1972, the School was the first one to provide a professional accounting education in Hong Kong. Then in 1988, the School became the first to offer an honours degree programme in Hong Kong. With over 1,400 full-time and part-time students enrolling in four undergraduate programmes, we are by far the largest provider of entrants into the accounting and finance professions in Hong Kong. Throughout the years, our undergraduate Accountancy programme has consistently maintained its popularity among JUPAS first-choice applications. The School has also been successful in launching a number of unique postgraduate programmes through the Graduate School of Business, and the first of its kind in Hong Kong, to meet the growing demands for life-long education. In particular, the School was one of the first to offer a postgraduate programme in the CyberU mode. In September 2003, with the Faculty restructuring, the School has expanded to over 100 full-time teaching staff specialising research and teaching in financial accounting, management accounting, finance, auditing, taxation, business law, economics, corporate governance, and accounting information systems. The School by now is perhaps the largest over the world in terms of the number of faculty staff from diverse academic and professional backgrounds.
